Experimental Drawing + Painting

COMING UP IN 2021

Instructor: Leslie Luxemburger

Age: 7-12

Example of Lessons

WEEK 1: Introduction to dynamic drawing: sketching vs doodling; introduction to mass and volume studies, contour, blind contour, tonal drawing using pencil, pen, conte, charcoal, water colour and acrylic.

WEEK 2: Introduction to plein air painting and drawing; intro to thumbnail sketching. Students practice drawing a series of thumbnail sketches of compositions around their house or outside their house/in their neighbourhood (weather permitting).

WEEK 3: Experimental drawing techniques in closer detail: tonal self-portrait drawing using mixed media (graphite, pastel, paint and pen) and different drawing techniques (cross-hatching, hatching, stipling, contour and shapes/zen tangle).

WEEK 4: Watercolour Resist Painting: students draw the outline/contours of a landscape or still life study with one or more oil pastels (one colour or variety of colours works). Students will draw these features on water colour paper or mixed media paper (still life composition is assembled by them at home). Give demonstration of how to create a balanced and good composition.

WEEK 5: Introduction to painting and drawing using a grid method and golden section. Live demo: 5-10 min. Students select one image from their image references and draw a grid with equal squares directly on their reference image. Then students draw the corresponding grid lines (equal to the number of grid lines/squares on their reference picture), on a sheet of paper that is 8.5″ x 11″ or 11″ x 17″. Using an HB or H pencil, students lightly reproduce the images and shapes/forms, which are found on their reference image, onto their finished sheet of paper.

WEEK 6: Introduction to a graphic novel and comic book. Students start off with an icebreaker activity: each student is given a sticky note pad and asked to tear off 10 sticky notes and place it on their table. Students will be given 5 minutes to visually respond to or draw the first thing that comes to mind for the number of random words:

Each student will then use five of these images to create a graphic novel strip, using one or more of the graphic novel techniques they learn in this lesson. Students are encouraged to collaborate with each other online or offline and to use any medium/materials to create the graphic novel panel. Students must submit at least 1 or 2 panels, via email to the instructor.

WEEK 7: Fantasy Art – a look at representation and incorporating modern social and environmental themes into paintings and drawings. Get to know the work of five modern fantasy and representational painters: Richard Schmid, Richard Ehnert, Patricia Traub, Daryl K. Sweet and Max Ginsberg

WEEK 8: Zen Tangle drawing. Using any and all techniques learned so far, students are to do a free drawing and create a “Zen Tangle” drawing that includes a combination of planned/symmetrical and asymmetrical elements, including shapes, colours, forms, lines, etc). Students can plan their zen tangle or create their work organically (through the doodling process).

WEEK 9: Acrylic painting of landscape using Grisaille method and mixed media painting (using Gel and matte gel medium, tissue paper, charcoal and acrylic paint on stretched canvas, canvas board or wood panel.

Show students how to draw a still life composition, or a portrait or landscape using the Grisaille (tonal/monotone) approach to drawing and painting. Visually explore the method of using underpaintings/base layers and building on these base layers in painting and drawing.

WEEK 10: Free studio class: students work on whatever work they’d like to complete. A 30 min portfolio assessment/review session will be offered to students who attend the call. Students will also be given some industry pro tips for developing and presenting their portfolio for 3 different fields/careers: a) 3D Artist (3D Animation, film, gaming); b) Illustration; c) Design
